To celebrate Hannah’s 18th birthday, we got into the giving mood. Here’s what we plan to do to honor Hannah today….
- Give Hannah’s bike to a young girl whose bike was stolen recently.
- Make a donation from the Hannah Metzler Memorial Fund to e-NABLE, an online volunteer community of humanitarian technologists who design, build, and disseminate inexpensive 3D-printed prosthetics. Mike’s friend and colleague, Jon Schull, founded the organization, and Mike’s former student, Farrukh Mohiuddin, is currently interning with them. Our donation is going to help pay for lodging for Farrukh and other students to attend the ‘Prosthetists Meet Printers’ Conference at Johns Hopkins later this month where the e-NABLE team will present their innovative approach to the medical community. - Make a donation from the Hannah Metzler Memorial Fund to Shane’s Inspiration, an organization that creates inclusive playgrounds and programs for children with disabilities. Organization founders, Scott Williams and Catherine Curry-Williams, embraced Hannah last year during her illness, gave her a California birthday experience we’ll never forget, and inspired us all to keep on giving. They lost their son, Shane, years ago and have chosen to give to others as a means of healing. In fact, Scott’s birthday is two days after Hannah’s, and he said reaching out to Hannah was the best birthday gift he could have given himself. Well, happy birthday, right back at ya, Scott! - Make a donation from the Hannah Metzler Memorial Fund to charitywater.org, an organization Hannah valued and donated to in the past as part of their September Birthday Campaign. Charitywater.org aims to end the clean water crisis, helping people in need of clean drinking water and women, in particular, who are often tasked with securing that water. With two September birthdays, Mike (and Hannah) are doing the campaign again, asking for donations in lieu of gifts. Learn more about charitywater.org here!
- Make a donation from the Hannah Metzler Memorial Fund to the Malala Fund, begun by Malala Yousafzai after she was shot by the Taliban because of her outspoken support of girls’ education. The Malala Fund invests to empower girls through education to achieve their potential and become agents of change in their communities. Learn more about the Malala Fund here!
